Lithium Sulfide (Li2S)
Lithium sulfide (Li2S) is a key raw material required for many next generation solid-state battery chemistries. Despite the importance of lithium sulfide in the next generation of batteries, it is currently only produced commercially in small quantities and at a high cost due to difficult and expensive process conditions (complicated reagents and high temperatures).
Standard Lithium continues to develop novel and innovative technologies along with our partners. Collaboration with our research and development partner, Telescope Innovations, has led to the development of a new, simple, low-temperature process for producing lithium sulfide. This successful process has converted lithium hydroxide (produced by Standard Lithium at its southern Arkansas Demonstration Plant) into battery quality lithium sulfide. The high purity lithium sulfide product has been delivered to solid-state battery companies in North America and Asia for testing and validation.
This innovative and IP-protected process has key advantages over the current manufacturing process including feedstock flexibility and impurity tolerance, lower processing temperatures and fewer process steps allowing for enhanced safety and lower cost during manufacture.
Our partnership with Telescope Innovations working on next-generation battery materials is an example of how Standard Lithium is leading a new wave of U.S. lithium production, securing a domestic supply of this critical resource, for now and into the future.
