Direct Lithium Extraction
Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) represents a logical evolution in lithium brine extraction to expand supply around the world to meet the growing worldwide demand for lithium. Historically, lithium extraction has been carried out primarily via evaporation ponds (salars) or hard rock mining. These processes can have poorer recovery, product quality inconsistencies and can result in significant environmental impacts. DLE results in faster extraction of lithium from brines with high efficiency resulting in more consistent final product purity and a more limited environmental footprint. DLE allows for lithium extraction within hours compared to months for historical processes. There are multiple categories of DLE technologies including adsorption, ion exchange and solvent extraction.
Various DLE processes have proven successful in projects in South America and China. Standard Lithium is at the forefront of applying DLE technology within North America to ensure a sustainable and efficient U.S. domestic lithium supply.
